Q: What is a hackathon? A: A hackathon is a chance to spend a whole day working on a programming project of your choice. Anything goes: you can make a game, a website, an app, or anything else you can think up. |
Q: Is hacking illegal? A: It's not that kind of hacking. At MasonHacks, you'll be building creative new software, rather than breaking into networks, infecting computers with malware, or any other negative practice sometimes connoted by the term "hacking." |

Q: Will there be prizes? A: Yes! We will be awarding various prizes of a $2,375 cash value. More information about our prizes is available on our Devpost page. |
Q: Can I compete on my own? A: Sure! If you would prefer to be your own team, that's just fine. |

Q: Who runs MasonHacks? A: The event is 100% student-run, through a partnership between George Mason's FIRST Robotics Team, 1418, and the George Mason Hack Club. |
Q: Are hardware hacks allowed too? A: Absolutely! Not only are they allowed, but a makerspace will be available containing any tools or hardware you might need for your project. |

Q: Will food be provided? A: Of course! MasonHacks be catered by local restaurants. Accomodations will be made for dietary restrictions. |
Q: Can I come if I'm not a student at GMHS? A: Yes. MasonHacks is open to all High Schoolers, even those from outside Mason. |
State Department Partnership
We're super excited to announce that we'll be partnering with the US Department of State this year! The State Department has provided us with a (gigantic) dataset giving a history of their diplomats' postings since the 1800s. The Department would like for MasonHacks participants to come up with creative and innovative tools for viewing this data. Such projects will be featured on their website at diplomacy.state.gov, and may be used at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. The State Department will also provide tech-field internship opportunities to interested students.
